Special Waste

Special wastes are those items that for a variety of reasons are not currently collected in the curbside garbage collection program. A few examples of special waste include tires, construction and demolition debris, and household hazardous waste.

TiresTires are not accepted as a part of the curbside program. Whole tires are banned from landfill disposal in Florida. In order to stay in compliance with state environmental regulations, the County does not allow tires to be collected at the curb as there is a potential that the tires may end up in the landfill when mixed in a truck with household garbage.

Tires delivered to Seminole County solid waste management facilities are recycled into landscape and playground materials and used as alternate fuel source for electricity production.

There a several options for tire disposal:
1. When purchasing new tires, leave the old with the store.

2. Deliver old tires to the Central Transfer Station or Seminole County Landfill.
The Central Transfer Station limits disposal to four (4) tires per person at $1.00 per
tire. At the Landfill loads of more than ten (10) tires and loads of tires not from a  passenger vehicle or light truck (over-sized or off road), as determined by the Solid Waste Management Division, will be charged by the ton.

3.  Participate in the Tire Collection Events that are held at the Central Transfer Station and Seminole County Landfill. These events offer residential households FREE disposal of up to five (5) tires.Only two (2) customers from different households per vehicle for a maximum of ten (10) tires per vehicle.

The events at both locations are from 8:00am to 2:00pm on the following dates:

Saturday, October 19, 2013
Saturday, April 19, 2014
Saturday, October 18, 2014
(Check calendar for upcoming events.)

Construction and Demolition DebrisCONSTRUCTION & DEMOLITION (C&D) DEBRIS
Construction and Demolition debris is not currently collected at the curb, as it can be a safety concern to workers and may cause damage to collection and transfer vehicles. Construction and Demolition debris is accepted at the landfill only. C&D delivered to the Seminole County Landfill is segregated from waste going directly in the landfill.

The majority of the C&D is recycled. For example, concrete and asphalt roofing shingles are used to make roadways to the working face of the landfill. Common examples of C&D include steel, window glass, brick, concrete, asphalt, roofing material, pipe, wallboard, lumber, large stumps and tree branches from land clearing or tree removal.
