Advanced Traffic Management System

Traffic Management CenterThe regional Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) is designed to enhance mobility on arterial roadways in Seminole County by incorporating the latest technological advancements.

The traffic management center is located in the Public Safety 911 Communication Center in the Public Safety/Sheriff's Office complex on US 17/92 in Sanford. The traffic management center includes a 20' wide by 5' high state-of-the-art display wall and two work stations. This Center is utilized jointly by the Traffic Engineering Division and 911 Operations personnel. The traffic management center is manned by one full-time operator, Monday-Friday 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM and for emergencies as needed.

There currently are twenty-nine (29) Variable Message Signs installed at the interchange areas with Interstate 4, at the intersections of US 17/92 with SR 436, SR 434 and Airport Blvd., and at the intersection of SR 436 with SR434. These signs convey real-time traffic information to motorists and can provide detour routing for incidents on Interstate 4 as well as Amber Alerts.

It is anticipated that the system will allow real-time information sharing with other jurisdictions. It will also provide pre-trip and en-route information to motorists enabling them to make informed decisions to avoid problem areas. The County is working with its regional partners to develop a web site containing real-time traffic information, including congestion level information, crash locations, and link travel times. This information will eventually be available to the public, allowing them to retrieve important information prior to taking a trip.
